Meeting was called to order by Pattie Wrighter at 5:30. No attendance was available.
Introductions of new attendees were made. Thank you Linda Carpenter, an aid with the school, for attending.
Pattie reported that the “Girls Take Charge” program at Binghamton University is not going to be pursued due to lack of interest. She also thanked whoever put the date for our meeting on the sign in the front of the building. It was also reported that Michelle Colgan has mailed out the Mall gift certificates directly to the Enjoy the City winners from each grade.
Secretary’s Report: Minutes from the November meeting were read and accepted. (No meeting in Dec)
Treasurer’s Report: Beginning Balance: $36,476.98. Deposits of $1,591.24, Withdrawals of 10,308.37. Ending balance of $27,759.85. A detailed report is available on request.
Correspondence: We received holiday cards from Lands End and Enjoy the City.
Principals Report: Andrew Fiorentino reported:
ELA state assessments will take place next week with the schedule to be as follows: 7th – Mon and Tues, 8th- Wed and Thurs, and 6th –Wed, Thurs, and Fri.
Due to a grant we received, the school is now offering the FAST program through the Lourdes health system. The program helps facilitate family communication and involves all family members of selected families. In the 8th grade there are 7 families participating. We hope to have families of 6th and 7th graders participating in the spring.
SMART board installation in all classrooms will be completed by the end of February. Vestal schools will be visiting to view the technology in use.
2nd marking quarter ends on January 25th.
A fundraiser dance for Rachel’s Challenge was mentioned.
In the Gym students have posted Character Education statements on the walls.
Scott Beattie was credited for the progress that has been made in the advisory program.
The Camfel Production assembly is scheduled for February 14th. This year’s theme is “Charting your Course”. We are asking Harpursville if they would be interested in scheduling together as the cost is less if more than one school is having them perform. The cost with our school only is $700, with another would be $500. Andy asked if the PATS could help fund this program. Pattie made a motion to fund the entire $700, Connie seconded, and a unanimous vote carried the motion
Scott Beattie reported:
Advisory will be extended by 5 minutes one day so that students can view the entire Martin Luther King, Jr. “I have a dream” speech.
There is a push to increase the Library circulation. Each advisory will now spend one day a month, (on a Thursday) in the library for silent reading.
The Public Service Announcement program previously discussed will be ramping up with students beginning to produce them during advisory.
Old Business: Spirit Wear: Connie reported that there was no interest with the other elementary schools to pursue a joint sale so it will not be held.
Java Joes: Angela reported that all orders were completed and distributed. A total profit of $1340 was raised with a total of 680 bags being sold by 75 students.
Box Tops: A check for $166.80 was received.
New Business: Gertrude Hawk: Susan Behn will be coordinating the fundraiser. Via correspondence, the sale last year began on Feb. 16th with money due on March 12th. The sale has to be done at least 2 weeks before Easter in order to have delivered in time. Being that Easter is early this year, the sale will have to be completed by the end of February.
Newspaper Fund Request: Mrs. Riley is unable to make Thursday meetings. Via correspondence she has requested monetary support from the PATS to help with the cost of producing 4 issues of the middle school newspaper. Last year the paper was self sufficient because of fundraisers, however they were only able to produce 3 issues due to the rising costs. This year’s budget is $1440 with $500 already being raised through fundraisers. Mrs. Riley is requesting any amount the PATS can contribute and the rest would be raised with happy ads and other fundraisers. Connie suggested that we use some of the Java Joes profits, as they were slated for nothing particular at this time, to give the newspaper the remaining $940 needed to produce this year’s issues. The motion was seconded by Pattie. A unanimous vote carried the motion.
Science Fair: Mr. Grace will attend the next PATS meeting to give any further information needed. All students in 7th and 8th grade must do a project for the Science Fair. This year’s date will be either April 3rd or the 10th. PATS support was requested to purchase the materials such as boards and ribbons still needed. The cost is approximately $378. There is some question as to how much the project boards are being purchased for. Carole motioned to give the funding, with the stipulation that various sources be researched for the boards. Pattie seconded and a unanimous vote carried the motion. The funding will come from the remaining profits from the Java Joes sale.
Dodge Ball tournament: This will be sometime this spring after the WBNG basketball game. We are trying for February 2nd, however there has been no return call from WBNG regarding this. We are trying to have both done before spring sports begin on March 31st.
Open Floor: Pattie reported that we have a very large balance that we are carrying in the PATS account. Approximately $5000 of this is for the 8th grade class trip, however this leaves us with more than we should be carrying. She has asked for ideas on how to spend some of this balance while benefiting the students and the school. She feels we need to provide more lasting items. Some suggestions were new floor mats, banners for the building, or even landscaping and a courtyard area in the rear of the building.
Dates of Interest: 1/14 -1/18 ELA exams
1/21 Martin Luther King day observed, NO SCHOOL
1/24 6th grade winter concert
