Meeting was called to order by Pattie Wrighter at 5:35 pm with the following present: Pattie Wrighter,
Maria Salo, Lindy Carpenter, Joanne Perry, Andrew Fiorentino, Angela Wallace, and Connie Kamp.
Correspondence: None to report
This weeks meeting opened with school counselor Maria Salo requesting funds for purchasing
refreshments for the 6th grade career day on April 11th. In the past a catered luncheon has been provided
to all volunteer presenters. Last year’s cost was $125 and Mrs. Salo feels this amount would be sufficient
for this year as well. A unanimous vote awarded the funds.
Mrs. Salo also presented information regarding a peer mediation program to be rolled out to the students
in the near future. Training for students and adults chosen would be given by ACCORD dispute
resolution. This training would be held at Catholic Charities over a 3 day period in April. A total of 16
students from various grade levels (6, 7, and 8) would receive this training, with the possibility of a few 5th
graders to help prepare for next year. Mrs. Salo stated that she feels these skills are an asset to all
involved. There would be adults overseeing the program and reviewing applications for those requesting
peer mediation to ensure that the topics are within the abilities of the students to handle. Students would
then conduct the mediation without direct adult involvement, although there would be and adult team
member close by in the event they are needed. A small video presentation using 4 students in mock
mediation situation will be shown in advisory to help spark interest and to explain further to the students
what Peer Mediation is. Student applications will be accepted during lunch and, again, a panel of adults
will review and recommend students for training. The mediation can be requested in various ways—
either by the students themselves or through staff and teachers who feel it may be beneficial. Students
involved will not be able to mediate for friends or if they are in any way involved in the situation
requiring mediation.
Secretary’s Report: Angela presented the minutes from the January 10th meeting, and they were
accepted as read.
Treasurer’s Report: A beginning balance of $27,759.85 was reported with deposits of $6,646.30 and
withdrawals of $3,023.48, leaving and ending balance of $31,382.67. The portion of
this balance designated for the 8th grade trip was reported to be $6158.60. The
report was accepted as read. A detailed version of the report is available on request.
Principal’s Report: Given by Andy Fiorentino.
State ELA assessments are completed with 100% participation, including any
makeup exams. Andy stated that the teachers felt that the 7th grade editing portion
was quite difficult, possibly resulting in some lower scores.
Practice testing has begun for the state Math assessments that will be held in March.
Several review sessions will be available during Mod 11 for all grade levels.
Camfel Productions was here today to present their assembly “Charting Your
Course”. This presentation focused on teaching students how to take responsibility
for themselves and how to handle situations such as bullying. Among the real life
stories presented were that of a football star who became paralyzed and a girl who
chose to dropout of school and later returned to complete her education. Mr.
Fiorentino expressed his pride for the student’s behavior and attentiveness.
FAST Graduation will be this evening. All 7 families that begun the program have
completed this.
3rd marking quarter has begun.
8th grade parents have completed the freshman scheduling process.
Mrs. Warwick is beginning work on a Talent Show.
Scott Beattie, with the advisory committee has come up with the activity schedule
for the next 2 months. “I Have a Dream” posters were made and there will be a
focus on the Iditarod dog sled race.
SMART board installation is complete
.
A chess tournament is being scheduled in the near future.
Old Business: WBNG-Staff basketball game: We did not hear back from WBNG, so a game
between the MS faculty and the HS faculty has been set up instead. It will be held in
the Middle School gym on March 1st @ 12:15. Golden Ticket holders will be
admitted for free with special raffles for them throughout the game. All proceeds
will benefit the 8th grade trip. It was requested that PATS provide funding for
movie theater gift cards to be used in the raffle. Pattie made a motion to provide 5
$20 cards, Angela seconded and an unanimous vote carried the motion.
Gertrude Hawk: The new date for completion is Feb 27th, not January as previously
stated.
PATS account balance: A discussion was again opened to determine what the PATS
can do for the students and the school to spend down the balance that we are
carrying. The students have worked hard to raise these funds and we need to make
sure they are benefiting from the hard work. One suggestion by Angela was more
dances and/or social activities after school. Some concern was expressed as to
teacher chaperone involvement, however Angela agreed to look into the possibility.
The idea of helping landscape a new courtyard in the rear of the building will be
discussed in more detail when Mr. Andrews is available for a meeting.
New Business: Mr. Andrews will be a guest speaker at next month’s meeting.
The dates of the Middle School book fair have been changed to May 12-14.
Open Floor: Connie remarked on the student art show at the Whip Works Gallery. The students
did a tremendous job, including the band member who performed throughout the
day.
Also mentioned was the formation of a student Jazz band by Ms. Krieger.
The next PATS meeting will be held on Thursday, March 13 at 5:30 pm.
The meeting was adjourned by Pattie Wrighter at 6:35 pm.
